The Story
Set in the vibrant, quirky, and turbulent neighborhood of Silver Lake in the late 1970s, SunsetJunction is a coming-of-age story about identity, community, and the courage to accept love.
Andres, a young gay Latino tenant organizer, has learned to protect himself. Scarred by a toxic relationship and convinced that intimacy comes at too high a price, he throws himself into the emerging queer movement, finding purpose in the fight for dignity, visibility, and belonging. But when he falls for Donald, a compassionate Black accountant whose quiet strength challenges everything Andres believes about love, he must decide whether he can risk allowing himself to be loved.
As violence against LGBTQ+ residents escalates, Andres, Donald, and a diverse coalition ofactivists, neighbors, gang members, and community leaders unite to create the first SunsetJunction Street Fair, a bold act of resistance that transforms fear into celebration and reclaims the streets for everyone. Their victory sparks a larger political movement that challenges entrenched power and helps reshapes Los Angeles.
Inspired by true events, Sunset Junction explores the intersection of race, sexuality, andbelonging during a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history. At its heart, however, it is an intimatelove story about a man who discovers that building a movement and allowing himself to be loved require the same act of courage.
Held annually from 1980 to 2010, the real Sunset Junction Street Fair welcomed more than200,000 people each year, leaving a lasting legacy of community, resilience, and hope.
